A good grooming routine is less about making your dog look polished and more about keeping skin, coat, ears, paws, and nails in a healthy condition. The right frequency depends mostly on coat type, activity level, and how quickly your pet gets dirty between sessions.
A simple grooming rhythm
- Short coats usually need brushing once or twice a week and a bath every four to six weeks.
- Medium and long coats often need brushing three to four times a week to prevent tangles.
- Curly coats benefit from frequent brushing and professional trims on a regular schedule.
- Double coats should be brushed consistently during shedding season to remove loose undercoat gently.
If your dog starts scratching more than usual, develops matting behind the ears, or has nails clicking loudly on the floor, that is usually a sign the routine needs to be tightened up. Small, regular maintenance sessions are easier for pets than long catch-up appointments.
